Preparing to Be Homeless

One of the questions Quora users always ask me is, “What do I do if I’m about to become homeless tomorrow?” Well, I believe in most cases people rarely have no idea they’re about to become homeless. I, for instance, had 30 days this time. I had 24 hours notice in 2006 because I quit a job with an abusive boss and opted to hit the road instead. Not the same as a surprise, but it was fast. Fortunately, I only had enough stuff to fill the van I bought the day I quit my job. No room for me in the van, but lots of room for my stuff. I regret not selling everything instead of paying for storage for almost two years. Worst decision of my life, and yet, here I am doing it again, only with MORE stuff. This time I didn’t have time to sell everything. I have put a limit on the time I’ll pay storage. My goal is to empty the units (two) in three months or less. Easily doable once I have three months.

If You’ve Been Evicted, or Are About To Be:

  • If YOU can sell everything you own or most of it, do it. I sold or gave away about 1/4 of the things I had…and if I had it to do over again, I’d have been at the flea market every weekend.
  • Get a Post Office Box or ask the Post Office to hold your mail until you can get a PO Box. Better to get a PO Box while you have an address than not. IF you can’t do that, find a friend or family member you…
